European Senior Championships: Preview
07 September 2010
An Irish team consisting of Amanda Mogey, Claire Nelson and National Senior Champion Ashley Givan travel to Ostrava, Czech Republic this week to compete in the European Senior Championships. More than 600 participants from 47 European countries are expected to take part in one of the key events on the international table tennis calendar. Ireland are drawn in the Challenge Division alongside Serbia, Bulgaria, Finland and Denmark.ITTA Technical Director John O'Donoghue wished the team well, stating:
"The Women's team have a very busy programme, starting with these Europeans before travelling to the Commonwealth Games. Both of these events represent great opportunities to get in some high quality matches. It is great to see them all back in action particularly after some recent injury problems. The girls are well prepared following a 2 week long training camp in Spain under Andrew Dennison, with an extremely high level of practice partner available."
The team is led by NPC Arthur Brett. He looked ahead to a challenging week of table tennis:
"We are looking forward to competing at the European Championships in Ostrava. It will be great to have Amanda and Claire back on board again as both suffered very bad injuries last season. They have worked extremely hard at rediscovering their fitness and have both put in extra table time to be prepared for these Championships. They bring a different style of play to the team and both are very competitive in the international arena. We also have National Senior Champion Ashley Givan making her bow on the senior team. Ashley had an outstanding last season, capturing the no1 spot at three age levels, including Senior. With the new tournament format we have a tough group but look forward to the challenges that lie ahead and hopefully have some good wins."
Keep a lookout on ITTAWeb for results updates over the course of the week. Best wishes to the Irish team.
