Leinster Veterans Tournament Report

The fickle contrasts between playing styles was very much in evidence at the Leinster Veterans Tournament. However, a triumph for our more mature exponents emanated from the experimental combined 50s and 60s event. Martin Pickles continued his elevated early season form, beating Tommy Caffrey 14-12 in the fifth set of an absorbing final. Martin’s gym sessions are really paying big dividends right now!!

Kariem Sabir triumphed 11-5 in the fifth over Kevin Devaney in the final of the 40s. Terry Dolan and Tommy Caffrey both provided stern challenges at the semi-final stage. In the Over 70s, Ted Mahaffy had to withstand a robust challenge from Jim Sheehan in the semi-final, winning in four close sets. Ted beat Tom Burke in the final.

In the Ladies event, Gillian Richardson won out in two very close encounters with Ros Carpenter and Sharon Brien to secure overall success. Gillian beat Ros 11-8 in the fifth set of the pivotal match.

Winners in the Consolation events were Dave Gibbons and Ken Ridsdale.

There were a disappointing number of withdrawals and late arrivals, which hampered the timely running of events. The readiness of all competitors to umpire was greatly appreciated. Once again, we thank STIGA for their continued support.
