Munster Veterans Tournament Report
A large entry of 37 competitors provided an interesting start to 2012 on Saturday. The Over 40s Men’s Singles turned up some very competitive encounters, with excellent performances from Willie Cherry and Tibor Pofok among others. However, maestro Tommy Caffrey prevailed in a thriller over Cherry in the semi-final, and he was always in control against Tibor in the final. The round Robin saw Kevin Devaney reverse an earlier loss against Tibor in the main event!
Willie Cherry made a triumphant debut in the Over 50s, easily accounting for Brian Finn in the final. Martin Pickles may be smarting from losing in the fifth set against Brian in the semi-final. A phenomenal burst of forehand kills by the long pimples specialist to win the fourth set from 4-8 was a highlight. Furthermore, Martin lost another titanic fifth setter 13-15 to Norman Nabney at the penultimate stage of the Over 60s. Tommy Caffrey triumphed once again in the final, in the process inflicting Norman’s first defeat at this level. John Finn’s improved performances in recent events have been noted.
Ted Mahaffy beat Jim Sheehan in the final of the Over 70s. This age group should see some interesting developments when Liam Perris adjusts to the wiles of these peers.
Gillian Richardson emerged victorious in the Ladies event. Her progress through the year has been most impressive. Involvement along with Sharon Brien in the Ladies British League next season should bring valuable experience and further success.
Sadly, the planned Doubles event did not take place, despite the efforts of organisers Philip, Kariem and Brian. Somehow, tighter schedules must be implemented to facilitate such an event in future. Organising and playing in the same tournament is NOT recommended. Constructive suggestions for better co-ordinated administration of tournaments will be most welcome. Speaking of which, it is really nice to welcome Mike Nash back to these shores. Also, the efforts of Ivan Shorten, Catherine Harnedy, Keld Jaksland and Mark McAlister just to play in the event must be acknowledged.
Finally, the invaluable support of STIGA in running the Veterans Society is greatly appreciated.
