Thursday Review: European Youths

Every coach and player in the hall is talking about it and thinking about it. Everyone wants to have it but only a few can grasp it long enough to succeed. It is everywhere in the hall touching the lucky ones and deserting the dejected. Confidence is the watchword at the 2010 ISTANBUL Metropolitan Municipality European Youth Championships and you can almost feel it in the air as you stride though the halls. It is in the final stages now and everyone knows that one good performance can propel you towards the medals.

The Irish players had a mixed day at the championships with both the Cadet girls going down in fighting performances. Ashley Givan had a good chance to win through to the next round against Valerie Tischler of Austria but in the see saw match she lost out in the 7th set. She was 2-0 before Tischler levelled at 2-2, then the austrian girl went 3-2 up before Ashley pulled it back to 3-3.

In similar fashion Edel OReilly had a point to be three one up against Ajila Kovac of Bosnia but the Bosnian levelled at 2-2 before easing her way past Edel 4-2. but the girls right back on track in the evening with a good win in the Cadet Girls doubles. It was sweet revenge for Ashley as she triumphed over Valerie Tischler who had beaten her in the singles. The girls now find themselves in the last 32 and facing one of their opponents from earlier in the tournament -- TROSMAN, Nicole from Israel!

After Paul's good win this morning which secured his place in the last 64 the boys doubles was a bit disappointing with Paul and Ashley Robinson going out to a good Spanish pair 3-0. No repeat of the heroics of last years doubles when they reached the last 32.

Meanwhile in the consolation Sam Logue had a good win over Christian Wolf from Austria who beat Ashley in yesterday's boys singles. Sam played well and fought hard to win 3-1. He faces Slovenis's Ervin Zelezen in the morning while Ashley had a bye and faces Croatia's Miho Simonovic. Both those matches are at 9 am as a curtain raiser to Paul's last 64 match with Luka Fucec of Croatia at 11am
