With only 2 events remaining in this year’s Vets season, the race for the final places on a number of the teams for the 6 Nations competition in September are very much open.

This is especially true in the Men’s 40’s where in the quarters, Tibor came out on top with a win over Phil Wallace. Tibor then met Daryl in the semi’s and Daryl again came out on top with a straight forward 3 nil win. In the other semi final Kevin Mackey was up against it when he went 2 sets to nil down against Rory but Kevin came storming back in the next 3 sets which he won in convincing fashion. In the final Daryl yet again was victorious and I’m sure he looking forward to March being equally successful.

In the Mens 50’s quarters, Kevin came out on top of Branco, Dave Pemberton won a close 5 sets with Philip Shaw, Des Flannagan had a victory over Mark McAllister and Pat McCloughan beat his fellow Donegal man Paul Gallagher. Pat beat Des in 4 sets in the semi’s and Kevin won the battle of Pioneers with a 3 nil victory over Dave Pemberton. In the final Pat was victorious over Kevin in 3 set and both all set for the forthcoming 6 Nations.

The Mens’s 60’s competition was thrown open due the absence of Kieran Burke. Tommy made his usual progress into the semi’s where he came up against a new opponent in Martin Pickles. In a hard fought match, Tommy came from 2:1 down to win in 5. In the other semi final Branco played a clever match to win in 3 sets over Brian Finn. In the final Tommy was too strong for fellow clubmate Branco and won in 3.

The Men’s 70’s had 2 very keenly contested quarter finals with Ken Peare winning in 5 sets against Jimmy Flemming and Martin Pickles gaining victory against Jim Story. In the semi’s Tommy won in 3 against Ken and Martin also won by the same score against Shay O’Reilly. Tommy completed a good weekend with  a 3 nil victory against Martin. Both are in a comfortable position with regarding  their qualification for the 6 nations.

The Ladies event was played on a round robin basis. With all to play for in the quest for the final positions in the 6 national it is all very tight. Ikuko is the improving player within the Ladies competition and she recorded wins over Paula and Sharon. Paula won her match with Sharon in 4 sets. Geraldine had wins (3:0) over Paula and over Sharon (3:1) with the first 2 sets being won in deuce. The match of the competition was between Geraldine and Ikuko. The match went the full distance and Geraldine won the match in a hard fought 5 set.

The final event of this season is in Pingzone  on Sat 7th March.
