Results from European Youth Championships

The success story from an Irish viewpoint thus far in Prague has been the form of the Cadet Boys. Following an intense pre-tournament camp in Halmstad, Sweden, Stephen Slater and Declan O'Brien were well prepared for the event. Speaking before the event, National Cadet Coach Shay Logue had the following to say:

Stephen and Declan have been Ireland's top two Cadets this year, winning all five Irish tournaments between them. Both boys have prepared well, working hard in their clubs and recently with a weeks training in Sweden. The EYC will be the toughest tournament yet for both boys and will require immense focus and concentration. With belief and hard work I am confident that both can produce their best Table tennis and will gain valuable experience going forward."

It certainly looks like their hard work has paid off, with wins against Finland, Kosovo and Azerbaijan putting them in to a play-off group with 29th position a possibility. They face Switzerland this evening at 6pm Irish team in what should be an intriguing encounter for the on-form duo.

In the Junior Boys event, Sam Hanley has been the form player, taking wins in 4 of his matches. Following a 3-0 defeat by Israel, Hanley, McCreery and Robinson face a game against Lithuania this evening to challenge for 33rd place.

In the Junior Girls, the Irish have struggled, picking up no wins in what has been a disappointing tournament for Nelson, Kenny and Givan. They will hope to improve in the Individual event, with Claire Nelson perhaps the most likely to progress. Ireland's top young player in Season 08/09 Ashley Givan drops to face players of her own age in the Cadets and will have learned greatly from her games against more experienced opponents.
